What is White Jelly Mushroom Extract?
Tremella fuciformis is a species of fungus that produces white, frond-like, gelatinous fruiting bodies known as basidiocarps. The mushroom is widespread and primarily found in the tropics, where it commonly grows on dead branches of broadleaf trees. Parasitic in nature, the White Jelly mushroom has an aggressive mycelial growth that forms the fruiting body when the fungus comes into contact with its preferred host, a broadleaf tree. Tremella fuciformis or commonly referred to as snow fungus, snow ear, silver ear fungus, and white jelly mushroom, is a commercially cultivated mushroom and is one of the most prevalent in Chinese medicine and culinary dishes of China. The fruiting bodies of the mushroom are how the fungus received its many monikers. Gelatinous and watery-white fruiting bodies, or fronds, can grow up to 7.5 cm across and are seaweed-like in structure with fronds that branch out and are often hardened or crisped at the edges. On a microscopic scale, the branching filaments of the mushroom or, hyphae, are clustered in a gelatinous matrix. Haustorial cells appear on the hyphae and produce filaments that attach to and penetrate the hyphae of the host.

How Does White Jelly Mushroom Extract Work?
Tremella fuciformis, like many of its mushroom relatives, is high in antioxidants. In studies, it has shown that the polysaccharides within it may promote antioxidant enzyme activity. An increase in this type of activity could prevent oxidative stress to cells caused by free radicals. Those same polysaccharides have also shown that they may help the fibroblasts in skin tissue resulting in better tissue integrity while also supporting wound healing. Furthermore, the mushroom has been shown to aid in reducing inflammation, which is conducive to supporting healthy heart function, reducing high cholesterol, inflammation within the intestinal tract. Harvest Naturals White Jelly extract is made from a dual extraction process. The first step of this process is hot-water-extraction. Hot-water-extraction is the most common and the least expensive and where many companies stop. When you find "cheap" mushroom supplements, they are either simple-dried powders or are water extracted only. The second step of the dual extraction process is the alcohol extraction. Ethanol (or sometimes methanol) extraction isolates the water-insoluble components. The alcohol extraction process is, in general, used as a second step after hot-water extraction. Also, since alcohol alone will not break down chitin effectively, heat must be added.Without this second step of alcohol extraction, many of the additional beneficial ingredients cannot be extracted.
