What is Licorice Extract?
Licorice Powder is extracted from the Glycyrrhiza glabra root, the root of a plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. The plant is native to several areas of the world but primarily located in the European and Asian continents, though it has been found in the transcontinental Middle East. In traditional medicine and herbalism, the licorice root is implemented for soothing gastrointestinal issues. Licorice Root has been shown to help repair the stomach lining through glycyrrhizic acid, the active compound in Licorice Root. Aside from its effects on gastrointestinal support, Licorice Root may also help the respiratory system. It is believed that the root may create clear, healthy mucus within the respiratory system, allowing it to operate more efficiently. Modern understanding of the active compound, glycyrrhizin, found in licorice shows potential for anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting properties and possibly even slowing the effects of aging on the brain.

How Does Licorice Extract Work?
Licorice extract isn't something new. It has commonly been used in Asian medicine for hundreds of years and still used to this day in modern Chinese medicine. Licorice stimulates the production of mucus in the gastric tract, decreasing irritation and inflammation and may assist in protecting your stomach and esophagus from stomach acid. It is commonly used to help prevent heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux, acting as an acid suppressant through that same mucus production. In the Licorice plant, there are more than 20 triterpenoids. Some of these triterpenoids have been identified to be responsible for antiviral activities. Another critical ingredient in the licorice root that seems to be the source of many of its benefits is Carbenoxolone. Carbenoxolone is also being studied for its possible help in slowing the effects of aging on the brain. Carbenoxolone appears to inhibit an enzyme in the brain involved in the making stress-related hormones associated with age-related mental decline.†
