Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) is a required inhibitory neurotransmitter that blocks the transmission of a nerve impulse from one cell to another in the central nervous system. This inhibitory mechanic prevents the over-firing of nerve cells. In the human brain, it has been posited that GABA signals interfere with the registration and consolidation stages of memory formation as well as counteracting Glutamate in the brain and balancing the levels. It is believed that the GABA system is found in the hippocampus, an area within the brain that is responsible for the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory. GABA has also been noted to participate in the sleep cycle as it is one of the abundant neurotransmitters, which may promote a relaxing effect. While GABA can not be obtained naturally from foods, certain foods, such as fruits, vegetables, teas, and red wine, contain substances such as flavonoids that influence how GABA works in the brain.
