What is Chaga Mushroom Extract Powder?
The name chaga comes from the Russian name of the fungus, which in turn is purportedly derived from the word for the fungus in Komi-Permyak, the language of the indigenous peoples in the Kama River Basin, west of the Ural Mountains. It is also known as the clinker polypore (from its resemblance to the slag left after a coal fire, known commonly as a "clinker" when coal fires were common), cinder conk, black mass and birch canker polypore in England and officially in Canada, it is known as the sterile conk trunk rot of birch. In North America, it is commonly referred to by its Russian name, chaga. In France, it is called the carie blanche spongieuse de bouleau (spongy white birch tree rot), and in Germany it is known as Schiefer Schillerporling (oblique Inonotus). The Dutch name is berkenweerschijnzwam (birch glow mushroom). In Norwegian, the name is kreftkjuke which literally translates as "cancer polypore", referring to the fungus' appearance or to its alleged medicinal properties. In Finnish, the name is pakurikääpä.

How Harvest Naturals Chaga Extract is Made
Chaga extract is made from a dual extraction process. The first step is a hot water extraction. This is the most common and the least expensive and where many companies stop. When you find "cheap" mushroom supplements, they are either simple dried powders or are water extracted only. To get the full benefit of medicinal mushrooms, the second (and much more costly) alcohol extraction step is required.

Ethanol (or sometimes methanol) extraction isolates the water-insoluble components. Alcohol extraction process is in general used as a second step after hot-water extraction. Also since alcohol alone will not break down chitin effectively, heat must be added.

Without this second step of alcohol extraction, many of the additional beneficial ingredients such as Superoxide Dismutase (Chaga contains 25 to 50 times SOD as other mushrooms), lanosterols, inositols, inotodiol, ergosterol, melanin betulin and betulinic acid and triterpenes simply cannot be extracted.

How to Use & Recommended Dosage
If you had wild harvested Chaga, you would have to grate into a fine powder before using it to brew a beverage resembling coffee or tea. Hard Rhino Chaga extract can be used directly to brew your own "Chaga tea". You will find our Chaga has a pleasant slightly vanilla like flavor. Try combining it with other vanilla flavors. Or, you can add it to coffee or other teas.

The recommended dose is 500mg to 1000mg per day which is roughly equal to 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon. At this dose, a 30 gram jar will last you 30 to 60 days.
