What is Chaga Mushroom Extract Powder?
Chaga is a climate-specific mushroom that thrives in colder environments such as Siberia, or Alaska, and can be found primarily on the bark of birch trees. The etymology of the mushroom comes from the Russian word czaga -- pronounced as 'Chaga' -- which means 'mushroom' in Komi-Permyak, the language of the peoples from the Kama River Basin, west of the Ural Mountains in western Russia. Chaga has a plethora of different names and is recognized differently depending on the region of the world in which it grows. The name of the fungus seemingly changes from country to country. In England and Canada, it is identified as the sterile conk trunk rot of birch.
Other identifications of the mushroom include, clinker polypore, cinder conk, black mass, and birch canker polypore. In the northern American region, it is primarily referred to by the Russian designation of its name, Chaga. France identifies the mushroom as Carie Blanche spongieuse de bouleau (spongy white birch tree rot) while Germany refers to it as Schiefer Schillerporling (oblique Inonotus). Moving further north-west to the Netherlands, the Dutch name refers to Chaga as 'berkenweerschijnzwam' (birch glow mushroom). In Norway, the name is 'kreftkjuke,' which translates directly to "Inonotus obliquus" more commonly, however, cancer polypore. This designation is believed to refer to the fungus' appearance or its alleged medicinal properties. In Finland, the name is 'pakurikääpä.'

How Does Chaga Mushroom Extract Work?
Chaga possesses antioxidant properties that afford it the ability to prevent the growth of dangerous cytokines and reduce inflammation while fighting off harmful bacteria and viruses. Chaga supports the stimulation of white blood cells through the promotion of healthy cytokines.

How is Harvest Naturals Chaga Extract Made?
Chaga extract is created from a dual extraction process. The first step of this process is hot-water-extraction. Hot-water-extraction is the most common and the least expensive and where many companies stop. When you find "cheap" mushroom supplements, they are either simply dried powders or are water extracted only. The second step of the dual extraction process is the alcohol extraction.
Ethanol (or sometimes methanol) extraction isolates the water-insoluble components. The alcohol extraction process is, in general, used as a second step after hot-water extraction. Also, since alcohol alone will not break down chitin effectively, heat must be added. Without this second step of alcohol extraction, many of the additional beneficial ingredients cannot be extracted. Some of the beneficial ingredients include Superoxide Dismutase, lanosterols, inositols, Inotodiol, ergosterol, melanin betulin, and betulinic acid and triterpenes.
NOTE: Chaga contains 25 to 50 times Superoxide Dismutase, or SOD, as other mushrooms.

How to Use & Recommended Dosage:
If you had wild-harvested Chaga, you would have to pulverize it into a fine powder before using it to brew a beverage resembling coffee or tea. Harvest Naturals Chaga extract can be used directly to brew your own "Chaga tea." You will find our Chaga has a pleasant and slight vanilla-like flavor.
The recommended dose is 500mg to 1000mg per day, which is roughly equal to 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon. At this dose, a 30-gram jar will last you 30 to 60 days.

Consider This:
Combine our Chaga Mushroom Extract with our GABA powder and our Beet Root Powder for improved cognitive support and a boost in antioxidants. Or, combine it with other vanilla flavors while adding it to coffee or other teas.
