What Are Shiitake Mushrooms?
Native to East Asia, Shiitake mushrooms grow in Japan, China, Indonesia, and Taiwan. The fungus is used in both the culinary and medicinal capacity. While famous for its uses in Asian cuisine, the mushroom boasts medicinal properties that may assist with the immune system, cardiovascular function, and bone health. How Do Shiitake Mushrooms Work?
Shiitake mushrooms, very much like it’s fungal counterparts, are high in polysaccharides, beta-glucans, sterols, and lipids. Most notably, polysaccharides are responsible for lowering LDL cholesterol, or bad cholesterol, and helping to regulate HDL cholesterol. Also, polysaccharides are also responsible for boosting the immune system. The strengthening of the immune system comes from a polysaccharide known as beta-glucan. Shiitake Mushrooms are also rich in amino acids that are found in meat. Vitamins B3, B5, and B6 can all be found within the mushroom. These amino acids are essential for creating and storing energy in cells, metabolism, and blood cell creation.
