What Are Phytosterols?

Phytosterols are nutrients that occur within plants and have a wide array of benefits. Some of those benefits are derived from their ability to help regulate cholesterol and antioxidants properties that help fight inflammation caused by free radicals. A common source of polyphenols is found in dark chocolate.

Potential Benefits of Phytosterols Include:

  • May support healthy cholesterol

  • May support reduction of inflammation

  • May result in more energy

How Do Phytosterols Work?

Phytosterols are structurally similar to that of cholesterol and are organically occurring in some plants. Polyphenols are an excellent example of phytochemicals.

Polyphenols are broken down into various subgroups, flavonoids, phenolic acids, polyphenolic amides, and a general category of other polyphenols. Flavonoids, such as kaempferol, catechins like epicatechin, anthocyanins, and quercetin, make up most polyphenols at around 60%. These types of flavonoids are in dark chocolate, apples, onions, and even red cabbage. Phenolic acids are the second majority sub-group comprising of 30%. Stilbenes and lignans are typical examples that are in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Polyphenolic amides include the key ingredient in chili peppers, capsaicin, a type of capsaicinoid, and avenathramides, which are in oats. The remaining polyphenols belong to a group known as other polyphenols. Within this group of other polyphenols resides resveratrol from red wine, ellagic acid, which is found in various berries, curcumin from turmeric, and lignans found in various seeds such as flaxseed, sesame seeds, and whole grains.
Phytosterols are found in plants’ cellular membranes and play a significant role in the diet, which possesses a wide variety of health benefits, from antioxidant properties to potential blood pressure regulation, and even in maintaining a healthy gut, as well as regulating cholesterol. The most common phytosterols found in the human diet are campesterol, stigmasterol, and sitosterol. Phytosterols are metabolized within the gut; though the body may prefer cholesterol over phytosterols, they still play a significant role in encouraging healthy cholesterol balance.
