What Is Ascorbic Acid?
Ascorbic Acid is a water-soluble essential vitamin, also known as Vitamin C. It is well known for its potential immune defense assistance by supporting cellular functions in the immune system. It is also a prevalent dietary supplement due to its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are molecules that may also assist the immune system.†
Ascorbic Acid Benefits & Uses May Include:
- Support Healthy Immune System Response†
- Antioxidant Properties†
- Metabolism Support†
How Does Ascorbic Acid Work?
Vitamin C is not stored in the body and must be replenished continuously from food or supplementation. Some foods high in Vitamin C include broccoli, orange juice, red, green or yellow peppers, strawberries, and tomatoes. It is believed that the antioxidant properties of Vitamin C are one of its most significant benefits. Antioxidants play an essential role in preventing damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen, such as free radicals and peroxides. Vitamin C is also necessary for the production of collagen (a structural protein in connective tissue) and an essential part of the skin, bone, and joint health. Vitamin C is a requirement for amino acid metabolism and the utilization of many nutrients such as Folic Acid and iron.† The vitamin is an integral part of the skin's defense system, as it is transported to the skin, helping to reinforce its barriers and acts as an antioxidant. Vitamin C also plays an essential role in helping the body to create blood vessels, muscles, and collagen in bones. Vitamin C also works to isolate free radicals in the body and is replenished by antioxidant enzymes. "Vitamin C's structure allows it to act on neurology..." This makes Vitamin C a viable resource for neuroprotection. This vitamin also aids in the prevention of iron deficiency by improving the uptake in iron from food. Vitamin C converts that is insufficiently absorbed and transforms it into a more absorbable state. Studies show that daily consumption of 100mg of Vitamin C may improve iron absorption by as much as 67%. While Vitamin C promotes the healthy intake of iron, it also encourages the healthy production of white blood cells that are known as lymphocytes and phagocytes and keeps them safe from harm caused by free radicals.†
